コロンボ＆香港　（２４）　バワ建築の「ザ・ヴィラ」

１８８０年代に建てられたオランダ統治時代の面影を残す建物をリニューアルした、たった１４室だけの小規模ホテル「ザ・ヴィラ」。

かつてジェフリー・バワが自分の別荘として使っていたものを、１９７８年にホテルとしてオープン。
以後オウナーは数代変わったようですが（現在はハイセンスなファッション雑貨店「パラダイスロード」の運営）、スタイリッシュでラグジャリーな小規模ホテルとしてさらに磨きがかけられているようです。
ルームレートはスタンダードでＵＳ＄２７０+位、スイートだとＵＳ＄６７１＋まで行くようです。

「World renowned Architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa, was originally drawn to this unique property in the 1970s, known as the Mohotti Walauwa. He was responsible for converting the then dilapidated ancestral home into Sri Lanka’s first boutique hotel. During it’s refurbishment, Bawa sold the property but continued to keep a keen eye on it’s development.
Due to the private charm of the property, it has been visited by such personalities as Sir Paul McCartney and his daughter, renowned fashion designer, Stella McCartney.
It has changed hands several times since then, but 30 years on, it has acquired a new lease of life by Shanth Fernando of Paradise Road who he took over the property in 2007. 1.5 years of working with the property, Fernando extended the property adding on a new wing and entrance pavilion, new swimming pool and re-levelled the gardens. Bathrooms have been re-worked and bedrooms modernised; Paradise Road The Villa Bentota opened in December 2009 showcasing the property at its new best and has received prestigious press acknowledgement as a result. 」
とその歴史について記述がありました。

バワのオリジナルに後からエクステリア、インテリアともにかなりなリニューアルがされているようですが、こうしたバワの建物には必ずといっていいほど出てくる回廊などここにもしっかりと・・・。
緑の使い方、水の使い方、光と影の使い方。
ここのレストランはこの辺りにたくさんあるリゾートホテルの中でもその料理の美味しさには定評があるとのことで、僕らはここでランチ。
ツアーの代金に含まれているというのに、「何を注文してもＯＫ」ですという太っ腹ぶり。
これはどうやらオリジナルの予約の、この後行く「ルヌガンガ」でのランチという予定が急遽キャンセルになってしまったことに対する、ツアー会社からの厚意のようなものだったようです。
海に面した芝生の庭の向こうにはインド洋が広がり、そこには何と線路も・・・。
僕は出会えませんでしたが、時折クラシカルな列車が敷地内を走り抜けていくと。
食事は噂通り美味しいもの、食欲がいまいちだったのでガスパチョとかサラダ、フルーツなどだけでしたが・・・。

こういう面白い木もたくさん植わっていてヴィジュアル的にインパクトのある館内ですが、冷房の室外機がばっちり見えちゃったるするところが、「アマン・リゾーツならこんなことは絶対ないよな」です（笑）。
